Summer 2020 Health Tips

Summer is around the corner and it brings a lot of fun and outdoor activities but it also brings health and safety challenges. Summer of 2020 is going to be a lot different than summer of 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic. There will be a significant less number of travelers because beaches, parks, community pools and theme parks remain closed or have restrictions. Summer festivals, carnivals, concerts and state fairs have been canceled. Here are some health tips for a safe and healthy summer.

1) Stay well hydrated. Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water a day. Avoid alcohol, sodas or juices high in sugar.

2) Eat healthy. Fresh summer fruits and vegetables provide hydration besides being a great source of vitamins.

3) Stay active and exercise regularly. Do outdoor activities like going for a walk, hiking, biking or swimmimg. If it’s too hot outdoors, exercise indoors.

4) Start a new hobby. Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. If gardening is not for you try tennis or golf.

5) Be sun smart. Use “broad spectrum” sunscreens (SPF at least 30) that protects from both UVB and UVA rays. Apply at least 30 mins prior to going out and reapply every 2 to 3 hours. Wear light-colored, light-weight clothing. Use hats with brims and sunglasses. Avoid the sun in peak hours between 10am and 4pm in order to minimize UV radiation.

6) Avoid bug bites. Use insect repellent containing DEET to prevent mosquito and tick bites.
Avoid tick bites by staying away from tall vegetation. Check for ticks after being outdoors.

7) Know your limits. Don’t let the fun in the sun get you carried away. Listen to your body and avoid overheating. Headaches, dizziness, nausea, muscle aches, and fatigue are signs of dehydration and you should take a break and cool down with cool air and cold drinks. This will prevent heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

8) Avoid coronavirus exposure. The last but not the least tip is to continue hand washing, wearing a mask while outdoors and social distancing to protect yourself from exposure to the coronavirus.

Have a safe, healthy and exciting summer!
